I still remember my first reaction.
WOW.
I had never seen a voltmeter this large before.
Perhaps I'm not old enough.
Perhaps I simply didn't know what I was looking at.
Either way, it stopped me in my tracks.
Someone once said that history is made up of things that were supposed to be impossible and things that were never supposed to happen.
This instrument belongs to both categories.
It was built in Britain by White Electrical Instrument Co. Ltd., sometime in the 1960s.
It was never meant to survive the age of smartphones, sensors and LCD displays.
It was certainly never meant to be rediscovered and introduced again like the launch of a modern tech gadget.
And yet, here it is.
Alive.
The story becomes even stranger.
During a school clean-up, this giant voltmeter was destined for the rubbish pile.
Fortunately, my laboratory assistant intercepted it.
Instead of throwing it away, she displayed it in the new laboratory.
Years later, it quietly found its way into my Heritage Lab Museum.
Look carefully.
The lower half is almost entirely transparent.
No plastic casing hiding the mechanism.
No sealed electronics.
No mystery.
The engineers wanted students to see everything.
In today's world, we see the number.
In the 1960s, students were invited to see how the number came into existence.
