SPM Physics: AHA! Inertia Moment -The Forgotten Umbrella in the Corner

 


In Sarawak’s old towns, every household once knew the tung oil umbrella — a handmade rain and sun shade crafted from bamboo, mulberry paper, and waterproof tung oil. With natural water resistance, flexible bamboo frames, and hand-painted designs, it was more than shelter; it was heritage.

This comic revives that memory through physics. When the umbrella spins, droplets fly tangentially, obeying Newton’s First Law. Inertia explains why water leaves the umbrella, but culture explains why the umbrella stays above another person. The heavier the mass, the greater the inertia — just like kindness, once rooted, it resists being shaken.

SPM Physics: AHA! Physics at Miri Beach — Falling Coconuts & Forces

 


At Miri Beach, students ask: is a coconut falling from a taller tree more dangerous? Physics answers with the concept of impulsive force. The higher the tree, the greater the change in momentum, and thus the larger the force. But the secret to safety lies in impact time. When a coconut falls on soft sand, the impact time is longer, the force is smaller, and the shell may not break. This is the beauty of physics — showing how time can soften the blow. AHA! Moment: Every coconut must fall, but every impact can be softened. The secret is time.

Life Reflection:Life is like a falling coconut. We cannot avoid falls or challenges. But if we give ourselves time to recover, the impact force of life becomes smaller. Don’t fear the fall — learn to stretch the time, and you will rise again.

SPM Physics: AHA! Inertia Moment — Oil Tankers in Miri

 


In Miri Oil Town, students ask: which oil tanker truck is the safest? The answer lies in inertia. A single large tank causes major liquid sloshing, increasing inertia and making the truck unstable. In contrast, five smaller tanks reduce sloshing, lowering inertia and improving stability. Moreover, a longer distance between the truck and tank makes U-turns easier. Conclusion: the design with small tanks and long distance is the safest. AHA! Moment: Small tanks reduce inertia, long distance increases stability — physics keeps Miri’s oil moving safely.

Life Reflection: Life is like an oil tanker truck. If you carry too much in one “big tank,” you may become unstable. But if you learn to divide your burdens into “smaller tanks,” you will be steadier and able to navigate life’s turns more smoothly.
