Water isn’t hard or sharp, yet high-pressure water jets can slice through metal. The secret lies in momentum and pressure.
When water moves at high velocity and suddenly stops upon hitting a surface, it experiences a large change in momentum.
This produces a large force, and when that force acts on a very small area, the resulting pressure becomes enormous:
SPM-style reasoning (Cause → Effect → Result):
1️⃣ Water jet moves at high velocity.
2️⃣ Velocity drops from 800 m/s to 0 m/s.
3️⃣ Large change in momentum occurs.
4️⃣ Large force is produced.
5️⃣ Force acts on a small area.
6️⃣ Very high pressure is produced.
7️⃣ Material is cut.
✗ Don’t say “water is hard” or “water is sharp.”
If
, the material can be cut.
AHA! Not hardness, but momentum. Not by sight, but by INSIGHT!
