Many students lose marks because they confuse electromagnetic waves with mechanical waves.
- Electromagnetic waves (EM waves):• Produced by oscillating electric and magnetic fields• Travel atin vacuum• Do not need a medium
- Mechanical waves:• Produced by a vibrating source• Can be transverse or longitudinal• Speed depends on medium (e.g. sound in air ≈ 340 m/s)• Must have a medium• Cannot travel in vacuum (e.g. sound waves, water waves, seismic waves)
Exam trap:
“Sound can travel in space.” ✗ Wrong!
Space has no air, so no medium → no sound.
Shortcut memory:
👉 EM wave = No medium needed
👉 Mechanical wave = Must have medium
AHA! EM waves need no medium, mechanical waves must. Not by sight, but by INSIGHT!
