The Compasses I Didn't Understand

And perhaps that was the beginning of the story.

Young readers, have you ever seen a pair of Vintage Lecture Lensatic Compasses like these?

I hadn't.

Years ago, I unearthed them from the Physics storeroom.

To be honest, I had no idea what they were for.

I didn't even know how to use them.

So I did what any curious Physics teacher would do.

I arranged them on a table, took a photograph, and moved on.

That photograph is the one you're looking at today.

————————————————————————————————————————

Years later, I found myself looking at the same photograph again.

This time, with a little research, old references and perhaps some assistance from AI, I began to realise that these might be far more than ordinary compasses.

Or perhaps not.

To be honest, even today, I am not entirely sure that I fully understand them.

I know a little more than I did back then.

Yet the more I learn, the more questions seem to appear.

The word "JAPAN" still sits quietly on the dial.

The folding cover.

The narrow sighting slit.

The mysterious markings and mechanisms.

All of them still seem to be guarding secrets from another era.

AHA! Moment

When I first photographed these compasses, I knew almost nothing about them. Years later, I know a little more. Perhaps that is how learning works. Every answer opens the door to another question.

Not by certainty, but by CURIOSITY. 🧭
