Electric field lines are one of SPM’s favourite traps. Students often look at the charge symbols first, but the real clue lies in the arrowheads.
Key principles:
Field lines originate from a positive charge.
Field lines terminate at a negative charge.
Lines directed away from a charge → Positive.
Lines directed towards a charge → Negative.
For a pair of charges, field lines always go from Q₁ (positive) to Q₂ (negative).
Exam traps to avoid:
Thinking field lines go from negative to positive.
Forgetting that arrowheads show the direction.
Misidentifying charges by symbols instead of line orientation.
👉 Shortcut: Start of field line = Positive. End of field line = Negative.
AHA! Arrowheads first, symbols later. Not by sight, but by INSIGHT!
