In wave physics, two graphs often look identical in shape but mean completely different things:
- Displacement-Time Graph (y vs t):• Studies one vibrating particle.• Shows displacement changes with time.• One complete cycle along x-axis = Period, T.
- Displacement-Distance Graph (y vs x):• Studies many particles in the medium at one instant.• Shows displacement distribution along distance.• One complete cycle along x-axis = Wavelength, λ.
SPM clue: Always check the x-axis first. Same sinusoidal curve ≠ same meaning.
Common exam trap: Students wrongly identify graphs by shape alone.
👉 Time axis → vibration of one particle.
👉 Distance axis → wave profile of many particles.
AHA! Same shape, different meaning. Not by sight, but by INSIGHT!
