Stand Firm Upon a Foundation

A few years ago, these retort stands were covered with rust.

Forgotten.

Neglected.

Some were already considered scrap metal.

Then something interesting happened.

My students and I decided to restore them.

We sanded them.

We repainted them.

We gave them a second chance.

The photograph above captures that moment.

But looking back today, I realise this story was never really about laboratory apparatus.

Because a retort stand does not stand because of its vertical rod.

It stands because of its foundation.

The heavy base carries the weight.

The base provides the stability.

The base determines whether everything remains upright when pressure arrives.

Physics knew this long before we did.

And perhaps that is why this old photograph came back to me during exam season.

Many students are anxious right now.

Revision notes everywhere.

Tutorials everywhere.

Panic everywhere.

Everyone is searching for shortcuts.

Everyone wants a last-minute miracle.

But a retort stand teaches a different lesson.

When the pressure comes, you do not stand because of what you learned yesterday.

You stand because of what you have been building all along.

In Physics, that foundation is simple:

✅ Concepts

✅ Principles

✅ Laws

Not memorised.

Understood.

Not rushed.

Built.

The rust was never the real problem.

A weak foundation would have been.

And perhaps the same is true for us.

The older I get, the more I realise that life rewards foundations, not shortcuts.

A building stands because of its foundation.

A retort stand stands because of its base.

A student stands because of what has been quietly built over months and years.

Not because of last night's revision.

Not by panic, but by FOUNDATION.
