Part 1: Standard Image Formation
Concave mirrors have five standard image formations depending on object position:
1️⃣ Beyond C → Real, Inverted, Diminished
2️⃣ At C → Real, Inverted, Same Size
3️⃣ Between C and F → Real, Inverted, Magnified
4️⃣ At F → Real, Inverted, Image at Infinity
Shortcut memory: Outside F → Real & Inverted; Inside F → Virtual & Upright.
Part 2: The Controversy at F
When the object is exactly at the focal point (u = f), reflected rays become parallel. Here’s where definitions differ:
Classical Optics: Image at infinity.
Engineering Optics: Real, inverted, at infinity (limit case).
Strict Mathematics: Special case (rays never intersect).
Some Textbooks: Virtual, upright, magnified (grouped with u < f).
Exam trap: Different labels ≠ different physics. The ray diagram is the same. Only the classification convention changes.
AHA! Same mirror, same rays, different labels. Not by sight, but by INSIGHT!
