SPM Physics:AHA! Bench Challenge: Specific Heat Explains Hotness!

Why does the iron bench feel hotter than the wooden one under the same sunlight? The answer lies in specific heat capacity:

  • Both benches receive the same heat energy.

  • Iron has a lower specific heat capacity than wood.

  • With the same energy, iron’s temperature rises more quickly.

  • Higher temperature → more heat transfer to the hand.

  • Result: iron feels hotter than wood.

The exam trap: don’t just write “iron absorbs more heat.” The key clue is lower specific heat capacity.

AHA! Lower capacity, higher heat. Not by sight, but by INSIGHT!
