SPM Physics: AHA! Electricity Moment — Why Birds Survive High-Voltage Wires

 


A bird standing on a high-voltage wire looks fragile, yet it survives. Why? Physics explains: current only flows when there is a potential difference across the body. Both feet touch the same conductor, so the potential difference is nearly zero, and no current flows.

But humans are not birds. In reality, our body span is much larger, so even a small distance can mean a dangerous voltage gradient. High voltage can also ionize air, causing electricity to jump as an arc. Muscle contraction from even small currents can make us lose control and touch another conductor.
