SPM Physics-AHA! Physics & Sunset — Apparent Sun Above Horizon

At Tanjung Aru Beach, Kota Kinabalu, students ask: Why is the Sun still visible after it has set? Physics says it’s refraction. Sunlight passes through denser air layers near the ground, bending towards the normal. Our eyes trace the rays back in straight lines, so the Sun looks like it’s still above the horizon even though it’s already gone. Nature’s illusion, explained by physics.

AHA! Moment: Less dense to denser, bends towards the normal — the true Sun below, the apparent Sun above.

Life Reflection: Watching the sunset from my seaside school always makes me think: “The sunset is infinitely beautiful, yet it is near dusk.” Stunning, but fleeting. Youth is just like that — it passes in the blink of an eye. Treasure today, equip yourself well. SPM too will pass quickly. Beyond it, a magnificent night sky filled with stars awaits.

Sun sets = illusion of light. Youth fades = spark of tomorrow. Not by sight, but by INSIGHT!
