Physics Layered-Look Book

Why use Foldables in Physics lessons?
  1.  Organize, display, and arrange information, making it easier for students to grasp physics  concepts, theories, facts, questions, research, and ideas.
  2.  Replace teacher-generated writing or photocopied sheets with student-generated print.
  3.  Incorporate the use of such skills as comparing and contrasting, recognizing cause and effect, and finding similarities and differences.
  4. Can be used as alternative assessment tools by teachers to evaluate student progress or by students to evaluate their own progress.

Physics Teaching Techniques: Mini-Whiteboards

Using mini-whiteboards to transform classroom practice

There are three reasons I find them useful:.
  1. Whole-class feedback:Mini-whiteboards, on which the whole class simultaneously writes down the answer to a question, are a quick way of gauging whether the class as a whole is getting your lesson. This method also satisfies the high-achievers who would normally stick their hands up.

 2.    Developing confidence. Quite a lot of students don’t like putting pen to paper. This is especially true in maths where there is usually a single right answer and, therefore, a high risk of ‘getting it wrong’. I’ve found students much more willing to make a start on mini boards because it’s easy to make corrections and wipe out mistakes. Once they’ve experimented, they can copy out the solution on paper.

3.   Checking individual work.  When students complete the same task on mini boards, they collaborate better by looking at what each other are writing and it’s easy for me to see too. They’re less afraid of someone pointing out a mistake because it’s quick to make corrections on the dry-erase surface.

Physics Presentation Topic (Invention): Who invented laptop

Physics Reflecting Writting by Jin Zong

When I first started learning physics, I thought that I would never be able to understand it and I might fail my physics subject in my SPM examination. Although I had referred to many physics reference books I have bought but I was still unable to understand it that time. However, I did not give up as I ask for helps from my friends who are good in physics and they will never refuse to teach me.

As the saying goes, practice makes perfect, I just kept on doing the past year questions and do as many physics questions as I could. From all the exercises I have done, I knew that the questions are almost the same and we need to always practise to master physics.

Besides, I also did take time to post the questions on lowyat forum on internet. Those senior forumers were very willing to help me to solve the questions. From their explanations, I could understand the questions and I’m able to solve those questions now.

The part I enjoy most in physics is the moment when you have solved a physics question. I find it interesting to get the correct answer and it feels like I have accomplished something big. I feel like want to do more physics exercises because it gives me the confidence to try. Besides, I also enjoy the moment when I have learnt something new. For example, it is very interesting to learn about some of the physics examples that can be used in our daily lives like the free fall concept and momentum.

Physics Reflecting Writting by Wendy Lim

Physics is anything happen naturally around us. Physics is common sense. Physics is everything. Physics is a fun and special world. Physics need logical thinking. When I first started learning physic, I cannot understand the concept and theory of physics. Besides, I also cannot remember all the formulae. Furthermore, I also do not know need use which suitable formulae when doing physics questions. When I first started learning physics, I felt helpless and wanted to give up even want to change class.

The part I enjoy most in physics is when teacher give us physics assignment. My first project is to build a barometer. This project had been done with my classmates. This is the first time we build useful artifact by ourselves. The barometer is using to measure the amount of air pressure. It is useful in our life because it can determine the weather whether is raining or sunny. This project made me started to like physics. I learn about Chapter 3 Force and Pressure from this project.

Apart from that, I also had done scrapbook with title of Specific Latent Heat. I had learnt the phenomenon of specific latent heat, activities that can show specific latent heat, applications of specific latent heat and uses of specific latent heat in our everyday life. This project had able me to gather information to develop the concept of it and reinforce a fact or concept. Besides, this project is done in group work too.
Other than that, we had also done scientific photograph project. This project made us enjoy in it and tried do our best for it. This project not only fun and creative, it also helps us to learn deeply about chapter 5 Light for form 4.
Scientists have made many new discoveries because new technologies have allowed them to see objects that are either very small or very distant. Therefore, we also had done interesting project about Inventions of Laptop. This project able we to know that invention is difficult or even just a moment that make the inventor got the idea. Moreover, we had also done a mind maps to help us more easier to study and understand physics. Next, we had also inventing a simple hydrometer by ourselves. This project not only helps us understand the concept, it also helps us in our exam even in our life too.

I am happy to have a great physics teacher gave us creative and interesting physics assignment that will help us able to understand concept and theory of physics, learn more, want to know more about it and it also helps us work in group and cooperate done it perfectly. I felt successful and world is wonderful when done physics project and I love physics now.

Barometer model (model used to measure the amount of air pressure)

Barometers are used to monitor changes in air pressure. This home-made barometer uses a balloon to trap air in a glass jar. When air pressure drops, the air in the balloon expands, so the pointer moves down. When air pressure increases, the air in the balloon contracts, so the pointer moves up.

Although air is invisible, it still has weight (1m3of air weighs about 1kg). Air pressure varies daily, and is due to the weight of air in the atmosphere above us. High pressure is usually associated with warm dry weather and low pressure with wet and cloudy weather.

  1. Cartesian Diver model ( Physics toy used to demonstrate Archimedes’ principle).

This straw diver contains an air bubble sealed inside. Without squeezing the bottle the overall density of the diver is slightly lower than that of the water, so it floats. When you squeeze the sides of the bottle you increase the pressure on the air bubble, compressing it into a smaller space.

This decrease in volume of the bubble causes an increase in the overall density of the straw diver. When it becomes greater than that of the surrounding water it sinks. Releasing the pressure (by releasing the bottle from your grip) allows the air bubble to expand back to its normal size, and the straw diver floats again.
